Studio Radicals features in-depth interviews with some of music’s most innovative minds.

Created by dCS and journalist Kate Hutchinson, the series spotlights composers, producers and engineers who are crafting unique sounds and bringing a fresh approach to music production.

Across eight episodes, we talk to them about their process, passions and inspiration. We also explore how music is made and what it takes to create a hit record.

In Episode 4, Kate travels to Yorkshire, England to meet Hannah Peel: composer, artist, musician and broadcaster who blends electronic and classical music to striking effect.

As an artist Hannah has worked on several ambitious solo projects – including a meditation on neuroscience inspired by her grandmother’s dementia and a seven-movement space odyssey written for synthesisers and a 29-piece brass band – as well as collaborations with various artists and ensembles from Paul Weller to Beibei Wang, Manchester Collective and the Paraorchestra.

She also composes music for film and TV. In 2023 she received an Ivor Novello award for her score for British drama series The Midwich Cuckoos, and her score for Game of Thrones documentary The Last Watch was nominated for an Emmy in 2019.

Hannah’s work defies categorisation, but there are some common threads – most notably, a bold and experimental approach to composition, and a love of finding unique sounds that move and intrigue listeners. Storytelling is always at the heart of her work, and she often explores themes of human connection, science and nature.

In the latest episode of Studio Radicals, Hannah discusses her musical process, composing music for film and TV, and continually pushing her craft.
